Henderson is a major suburb of Waitakere City, in the Auckland metropolitan area in the North Island of New Zealand. As at 2003, it has a population of about 15,000. It is located 13 kilometres to the west of Auckland city centre, and two kilometres to the west of the Whau River, a southwestern arm of the Waitemata Harbour.
The suburb is the centre of the Henderson ward, one of the four administrative divisions of Waitakere City. It was named after early colonial settler Thomas Henderson, who started a timber mill in the area in 1864 to process the kauri trees which were cut from the Henderson Valley, and upstream from the eastern flanks of the Waitakere Ranges.
Henderson features a large shopping and theatre complex, the Australian-owned Westfield West City shopping centre. Waitakere Central, the new multi-million dollar home of the Waitakere City Council sits across the western train line from West City. Henderson train station has recently been expanded to accommodate a second railway track and a bus depot is planned nearby. The public transport hub has been dubbed baby britomart. Henderson High School is a co-educational secondary school, catering for students from Year 9 to Year 13.
